A Short Yet Thorough View To The History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority


Established during an ocean of racial prejudice, Sigma Gamma Rho is the only sorority of the four historically African-American sororities which is also a member of the NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) founded in a predominantly white college.


Sigma Gamma Rho was first founded at the Butler University in Indianapolis of Indiana on November 12, 1922 by 7 young educators. Since then the sorority became legitimate in the state of Indiana on December 1922, and later on, it became recognized as a national collegiate sorority after charter’s granting to the alpha chapter on December 30, 1929.

It’s evident that Sigma Gamma Rho sorority is a non-profit organization that’s aiming to develop the American comm Sigma Gamma Rho sorority unity while enhancing the quality of life of African-American people against the racial prejudice.  This sorority is dedicated to fight against the barriers and inequalities based on creed, color and religion among Americans via their resources, services as well as leaderships.

That’s not just the aim that’s yet to be achieved. The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority has been successful to prove its commitment in improving the quality of lives as well as betterment of the society via –
The human right legislation support
Programs of community development
Involvement of affiliate programs
Provision education, healthcare and housing for individuals

In short, Sigma Gamma Rho is a leading sorority that’s more than 1,00,000 members having over 500 undergraduate among them and alumnae chapters throughout the country. Women too can be the members of it via undergraduate chapters at the universities or through alumnae chapters after getting the degree.
